Rhodium is a chemical element that has been assigned the symbol Rh. Its primary use is in catalytic converters for motor vehicles … however, we use it every day in the jewelry industry. Here’s how: When a white gold jewelry piece is new, Rhodium is electroplated onto the item to give it a bright white and reflective surface. In white gold some of the alloys are nickel or palladium (both white metals). This makes the gold have a creamy white color to the metal. In some light, the natural white gold will have a yellowish tint. However, when you put it next to a yellow gold piece, the white piece definitely looks white. The higher the gold content, the more yellow it will appear. Non-Plated 18kt white gold will look more yellow than a 10kt white gold item. Rhodium finishes the process, and while it’s on the surface, can make the karat of gold indistinguishable… they’ll all have a bright silver mirror-finish!
Before and after with rhodium plating on a diamond ring.
Pure rhodium jewelry is exceptionally rare and expensive, as it’s very difficult to fabricate (due to poor malleability) and has such a high melting point that I have never seen any. It wouldn’t be my choice to have a fine ring made out of. Because of rhodium’s high price, silver (which tarnishes quickly) is usually coated/plated with imitation rhodium to slow the discoloration process. The downside of this, however, is it makes it impossible to size or polish the silver jewelry without the other layers showing through.

For hundreds of years sapphires have mesmerized humankind, with their vibrant blue hues. Sapphires were once considered a sign of wealth, honor, faithfulness, and health. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was believed that sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm. During the middle ages, the clergy wore blue sapphires as a symbol of the heavens and peace. In today’s society, blue sapphires often instill thoughts of romance and royalty, thanks to Princess Di’s engagement ring.
When you ask someone to picture a sapphire, they will usually imagine a vivid, royal blue stone.  However, did you know sapphires come in many various colors and properties?  Sapphires have a wide range of hues from pink to teal to purple. The only color you won’t get them in is red. A red corundum, the scientific term for sapphire, is actually a ruby. Sapphires are mined all round the world, even in our sister state of Montana.  Often times, high quality sapphires of certain colors are mined from only one region. For example, Australia is well known for its blue-green sapphires. Where as for a Padparadscha sapphires, a pinkish-orange color, are mined in Sri Lanka. While similarly-colored sapphires are also found in Madagascar and Tanzania, most experts agree that true padparadscha sapphires come from Sri Lanka.

Sapphires Properties

Sapphires can also have some truly amazing properties, which will make your stone even more unique and eye-catching. Bi-colored sapphires are those which have two distinct colors within the same stone. This is also referred to as color zoning, because there is a clear ‘zone’ that is a different hue then the rest of the stone. Sometimes it can occur with a subtle gradient between the two colors, other times it will be a harsh line where the two meet. There are also star sapphires, which show off a dazzling star pattern when hit at just the right angle by light. This is caused by fine spindle-like inclusions close to the sapphire’s surface. One of the other fascinating types is color-change sapphires. This means that under different types of lighting, the sapphire will actually appear to be a different color. The most common color change you’ll see in a sapphire is blue to purple.

Reasons Why To ADD Sapphires To Your Jewelry Collection

The vast range of colors and properties are not the only reasons that sapphires are a great addition to your jewelry collection. They are also very durable stones, perfect for everyday wear. Sapphires are the second hardest gem used in jewelry next to diamonds, rating at a 9 on Moh’s hardness scale. This means very few materials can scratch the surface. Sapphires are also very stable. Common chemicals and extreme heat won’t damage your sapphire. Due to the crystal structure of sapphires, they are difficult to crack, chip, or break. With that all said no stone is indestructible, and should be treated with care and respect to prevent damage.  If you’re looking for a classic, one-of-a kind gemstone that will stand the test of time, for your next jewelry purchase look no further. Sapphires may be the perfect stone for you!

Ask any jeweler and they can tell you a horror story when it comes to cleaning jewelry.  Here at Hendrickson’s, we recommend getting your jewelry professionally cleaned 2 times a year, AT LEAST! Jewelry is a statement that we wear daily. Just like your clothes, hair and car, it needs to be cleaned. Here is a story from a fellow jewelry store:  A sweet lady came in because the chain on her favorite necklace broke and she wanted it fixed. Looking at the hollow heart-shaped pendant, the jeweler could see dirt and grime on it. In fact, they could even see clumps of hair inside the locket. The jeweler took the necklace in a paper towel so they would not touch it, confirmed it was not a memory locket, and started to sanitize it. The full process of the cleaning and sanitation took two days. They first cleaned it for 2 hours in their ultrasonic cleaner, trying to shake and separate all the dirt from the jewelry. After seeing that none of it had moved, they allowed it to soak for about 18 hours, then used a small metal rod to gently scrape and remove the gunk and hair from the locket. They continued to clean it for another day before they could properly repair any breaks, or replace stones that had fallen out years before.

How We Clean

When you bring your jewelry into us to clean, we spend time inspecting it to see if there are any repairs we notice (at times some repairs are not evident until they’re completely cleaned). We then deposit diamond and sapphire stone jewelry that is gold or platinum into acid (silver and other gemstones that can’t go into the acid just go into the ultrasonic).  This helps loosen dirt and grime and removes any organic material from the jewelry. Once it has spent at least 5 minutes in the acid bath, we steam off the jewelry and put it into the ultrasonic with our cleaning solution. This sanitizes the jewelry and will shake off the remaining dirt and grime. Sometimes the jewelry needs multiple rotations of ultrasonic and acid to clean it up. We clean all the jewelry thoroughly before we work on it. This keeps us safe and ensures your jewelry looks brand new.

Locket In Cleaning Solution

The most overlooked pieces of jewelry are earrings and necklaces. We recommend you come in at least two times a year. The best procedure, however, is to come in every three months to have your jewelry inspected and cleaned. Here at Hendrickson’s, you can bring your jewelry in for a free cleaning and inspection any time we are open! Our staff will make sure your jewelry looks amazing, and inform you if there if any repairs are necessary.

Happy Halloween!

What makes jewelry special? There are many things that we want to purchase in life. So what makes jewelry different?

Let’s start with the fact that everyone has their “Priorities” in life. What is yours? Is it traveling the world, new clothes, a cool new vehicle, boat or RV? These are all great things that make us feel like we are working for something, other than paying bills. Let’s take a vacation! The memories last a lifetime. But there is nothing you physically take with you from this experience. Let’s say you purchase something to remind you of the vacation. Would it mean anything to a family member that didn’t go on that vacation with you? No one can inherit your memories. With COVID-19, unfortunately, vacations are more of a staycation now days. We have even had some friends say they are wearing their vacation on their finger this year. Let’s go shopping and buy some new clothes! How long do they last before they wear out or go out of style? How about a new vehicle, boat or RV…Great idea! But they wear out, too. Sure they can be fixed but it can never be brand new again.

Now, let’s head to the jewelry store! Jewelry can last for generations. It can be passed down to family members. If styles change or the piece has been worn out, we can use the gold or platinum and stones to make something brand new. Sentimentally speaking, it’s still the metal and stones that mom wore. When we wear our jewelry it shows up in pictures throughout our lives. Sure, the background changes, the clothes change, everyone gets a bit older. But, the jewelry is consistently in the photos. How precious is it that the gold I have put into something for me at one time was my dad’s wedding band. I have many pictures of him wearing that. That, my friends, is why jewelry is different than anything else.

My great-great granddaughter could be wearing my wedding ring someday and I might not even get the chance meet her. But, she will know about me. Jewelry is about memories. It makes us feel good & gives us warm fuzzies. It reminds us of a happy or exciting time. I bet you never forgot when and where you proposed to her. Or the piece of jewelry that was under the Christmas tree 2 years ago.

Happy NEW YEars!  Here at Hendrickson’s Fine Jewelry we asked our Facebook Followers and Top Fans to share what their secret is to a long and happy relationship. We would then award a special gift to those who type 10 words or more in their answer. Here is what some of them had to say; Robin Rich Eggertsen said “Been married for 25 years and Communication is the key!” Jerrilea Hawkins Archer said “Gary D Archer & I we’re married 41 years when he left me, of course living forever with me or going to Heaven for a rest & to pay on the links in Heaven…he struggled to stay but Heaven & Golf won! Miss him everyday and we would have celebrated 49 years 06/05/2020! No doubt we would have made it because he once said, “I can’t imagine you as an ex-wife, easier to keep you as my wife!” HUMOR thru all the years of laughter, love, & memories made! Love of my life & he was happy cuz I told him he was.” Jeanine McEwen Lane said “Always treat your spouse better than ANYONE else in this world. There is so much involved in that statement: Smile, touch, hug, listen, play, patience, no harsh words, calm down before you speak and most of all laugh, etc. Remember that you’re separate human beings with different thoughts and backgrounds. Come together and embrace the differences! Ashlyn Brown said “I’ve only been married for a little over a year, but I’ve learned that trust, kindness, and forgiveness can go a long way!” Jennifer Feltner King said “William and I have been together for 19 and married for 17 years. We are each other’s best friend. We talk all the time and always say “I love you” before hanging up on the phone, leaving for the day or say goodnight. We have a great time together with humor even running errands. What works: humor, respect, communication, trust and an undying desire to be with each other.” Lena Bea said “What a cool family legacy. My husband and I have been married 23 years. Friendship is one key. We enjoy spending time together, no matter what we are doing. Also a little stubbornness helps, to work through or wait out the rough patches. Its not always about how we feel, it’s about the commitment we made. It’s a decision we made and continue to make. We also laugh lot and have fun together.” Shawn Pugel said “Been married for 37 years. The best advice is communication. Don’t leave mad, don’t go to bed mad and take a step back, process your feelings and come back and talk.” Cindy Grandstaff Geertson said “Ken and I have been married almost 18yrs, it started with Sarah and the engagement ring. We always remember to say I Love You every night. We also talk about what was wrong later when we have calmed down if we agreed to disagree.” Kendri Lengkeek said “My husband Rob and I have been together as of Nov 17 sixteen years. Our 16th wedding anniversary is March 11. We have 2 children together ages 12 and almost 15. We always kiss goodnight and when leaving each other. We say love you all the time and before we go to bed. We try to talk after a disagreement and come up with a way to resolve it without staying upset at each other. We have had our ups and downs but we are still going strong.” Kathy Dunlap Fritz said “Larry and I have been married 50 years, this past June. He is the love of my life. We started off as friends and we still like and respect each other. We are each others priority, but we realize that we each need our own space and friends, too. We do enjoy our together time. Trust and communication are big parts of any relationship. Onward and upward for us.” Joanne Caddick Hoffman said “We are coming up to our “40th” Anniversary in December. We dated for a total of three weeks while I was here on vacation and the rest is history. We have been best friends – always looking out for each other’s best interest. There’s love – kindness – communication – lots of laughter. Life throws many challenges and it’s being there for each other through the fun and the hard times. On a side note – Dean made eternity bands for us many years ago.” Melanie Miller said “My husband and I have been married just over 28 years. Dean helped us design and build our rings for us and I still love them so much. I think what has worked for me is if there is anything that comes up I ask myself , will this matter in 10 years? If it will then we talk about it if not it is forgotten. I choose to be married to him and we have a great support team.” Willia Zappa said “Been together 30 years married 28 years my advice is love each other like when you first met especially when you are mad.”      We got to see what our loyal customers had to say, now let’s take a peek into the lives of “The ones that do the work!” Why our relationship works: We treat each other with respect and try to show it every day. There is nothing either of us would do intentionally to hurt the other. We are best friends that talk, tease and play to make each other smile.  We make life about us when we are together. Sarah Eshelman Communication is a priority in our relationship.  If there is an issue, we talk (we don’t yell).  We work it out with kind words and never point fingers at each other.  Both of us strive to be consistent in our emotions and work hard to balance our work and family life.  We work together, but that doesn’t mean we see each other during the day.  We make time for each other.  And we consider each other’s best friend. Dean Hendrickson March 25th my wife Lynn and I will be marries for 43 years. I owe it all to my lord and savior Jesus Christ. He has shown both of us to really appreciate each other. We communicate very well and we always talk things over. I love my wife more than ever now, even that first day I took the marriage vows. I love her so! Steven Sonoda Gary and I have been together for so long that we can almost finish each other’s sentences, but even with 43 years of marriage true communication is pretty important. We respect each other’s feelings and opinions and we’ve always been able to agree to disagree if there are differences. He truly is my best friend. We’ve got each other’s back. Being able to laugh at life’s little weirdnesses together just helps to keep things in perspective. I can’t wait to see what we can do with the next 43!! Trudy Wood  Quality time and communication is what makes our relationship so strong. We both get caught up in the busyness of everyday life, but we always set alone time each day and talk to each other about how everything is going. We both fully listen to what the other person has to say. I cherish our time together. Jade Hendrickson Every Thursday night we do date night no matter what is going on in our life. We respect each other’s privacy and boundaries but still enjoy jokes and playing around. We are competitive when playing board games but are compasonite toward eachothers feelings. Our lives are complete with one another. If he’s a bird, I’m a bird Bryce Hendrickson We like to pride ourselves on friendship, love and family here at Hendrickson’s. Now that you got the chance to hear about many years of relationships, imagine the stories of what a piece of jewelry can tell.

None of us want to just “exist” in life. Love is what makes life worth living. February 14th is Valentine’s Day. It is promoted to be a day you acknowledge your significant other. A lot of people say that this is a commercial holiday. That being said…Shouldn’t we celebrate Valentine’s Day every day? We only get one go around at this thing called life. Be happy in the moment. Make the choice to give your love freely with no holding back. You will be rewarded 10 fold. We asked some of our Facebook fans how they met the love of their life. Here are some of their answers, along with ours.

Sue H: We met long distance-Idaho and Texas. Physically met in February, 2007 and married 4 months later (after only seeing each other face to face 23 days!) Almost 14 years later….!!!

Jeanine L: After 7 years of being single I had finally given up on finding my true love. I was at the old Sunshine Lounge on Curtis when I spotted an incredibly handsome grey haired man at the bar. He saw me, came over and asked me to dance. We danced all night and when the bar closed we met up for breakfast, I gave him my phone number and went home. The next day he came over to my house and almost every day after that. I found the love of my life that night and we were married two years later. Basically, I got picked up in a bar and have thanked God every day since that night!

Willia Z: Oh my, what a story to be told. 30 years ago I was lying on my friend’s bed in Nampa flipping through his yearbook. My friend from high school (girl) was teaching him out to steal a street sign in 60 seconds. (Now I never said I was a good kid). I saw my husband in the yearbook and recognized him from running into each other over the years. My friend told me about him. Us girls left and I dropped my friend off at her house. My other friend was at my house and we called him (lied about our names). Him and his friend came over on his motorcycle and hung out in my yard. After that he would come to K-Mart (where I worked) to talk. I knew on day three, I was going to marry him someday. Funny thing on day three he told his friend he was going to marry me someday. True love just knows!!

Connie H: Think I was about 2, he was 3. My mom babysat him. Been friends ever since.

Joy T: Dance lessons at the Buffalo Club in Boise

Barbara K: Christmas Eve 1976 we were the only ones at the party not a couple. A blind date. Guess it worked as we got married and it is 43 years this march. Communication/listening is very important and being there for each other thru anything that comes you way.***but maybe a trip to Hendrickson’s is due as he slipped this on my finger today from his carmel apple.
A pretend ring of a snow flack on a hand

Sarah & Dean

Dean and Sarah
Sarah Eshelman: Dean and I met close to 26 years ago. I have been a jewelry store owner since 1993. With both of us being in the jewelry industry, it feels we have “always” been business associates, friends even. Let me explain…He made custom jewelry for my business. This was not something that I told anyone because we were competitors too. I visited him at his store 1 to 2 times per week. He always made my visit fun with his crazy sense of humor. Then about 5 years ago, he asked me out on a date. I didn’t really see him that way because we had been friends for so many years. We went to a movie and he reached over and put his hand on my leg. I was shocked, to say the least. I whispered to him “Don’t even think about it!” Now we look back on that day and laugh.

Jade & Myles

Jade and Myles

Jade Hendrickson: I met Myles in 2013 when I started working at Idaho Pizza. He was my supervisor and we were both in a relationship. We became friends and all 4 of us would always go play pool or catch up and just hangout. A few years go by and he found another job and I moved up to become Manager. We fell out of touch until a couple years later he applied at my store and by now we are both single. He asked me to dinner, 3 years later and a promise ring he still does ♥

Whether you have just met or you’ve been together for years, cherish the time that you get with your significant other. Enjoy each other and take time to learn about one another. Just when you think you’ve been together for a couple months years start to go by, but remember time fly’s when you’re having fun!

Do you ever walk into a jewelry store, stand there and think; I know what I want, but am I going to get the best quality for my budget? Not all jewelry stores are as honest as we are. We will only sell you a diamond that we, ourselves, would buy. Plus, we will only sell you high quality pieces that will make you look & feel wonderful! That’s why we buy jewelry in the first place, right? We want to buy the best for our loved ones, or even ourselves. We want to feel amazing and special when we look at ourselves. If you are a little confused about picking out the right diamond, here are some important things you should know before buying one. THE 4 C’s!

First "C": The Cut

A Cut of the Diamond references to two different aspects. The first is the Shape of the diamond. The most brilliant shape is the Round cut diamond. But, in the photo above you can see other common cuts.  The second part of the cut is the ratio of the diamond.  When the cut on a diamond is IDEAL (not too deep and not too shallow) the light goes through the top, bounces around the bottom and shines back up through the top. Round and princess cut diamonds are the only 2 cuts that can be cut to Ideal proportions.  An Ideal cut diamond reflects almost all the light that enters the stone. That is why the diamond is so sparkly and catches the light.  When the cut is too shallow (wide and short), the light goes through the top and out the side making the diamond appear dark and dull. When the cut is too deep (narrow and tall), the light goes through the top and bounces out the side/bottom. This makes the diamond appear smaller than it actually is.  An Ideal cut can make all the difference between a perfect eye catching diamond and just having a diamond.

Second "C": The Color

The color of a diamond relates to its whiteness. Color is graded from the side of the diamond.  GIA certified diamonds are graded loose (not set in a ring).   The classification is like the alphabet, except the diamond alphabet starts with the letter D. D is the whitest a diamond can get. D, E, or F, are considered colorless which means that they are the most sought after, and more expensive due to their rarity.  Diamonds that are G, H, I, or J, are near colorless.  As you continue down the alphabet you will begin to see a faint yellow color. Diamonds that are N-Z are yellow to brown. These Diamonds are great, if you want a Beautiful Yellow Gold ring with a yellow stone.  The Color Scale only grades the whiteness of the diamond. If you have a colored diamond it will not have a color grade related. It will be a classified as a Fancy color (Mined), High Pressured & High Temperature (treated) or an irradiated diamond (Treated). The Colored diamonds allow you to have the Hardness of a diamond and the shine of a diamond but the color of a different stone.

Third "C": The Clarity

The clarity of the diamond is a grade based on the inclusions that are inside the diamond. Some examples of inclusions are: a “Bruise” which is a tiny impact that creates small root-like lines, a “Pinpoint” which is minute crystal enclosed in the diamond that looks like tiny specs and a “Cloud” which is a group of tiny pinpoints that make the diamond look “cloudy”.

The Clarity is graded with 10x power magnification. The diamond grader looks at the number of inclusions, the size of the inclusions and their location in a diamond. The ratings are abbreviated using these abbreviations V=Very S= Slight I=Inclusions. The best grade is FL (IF) which stands for internally flawless. Flawless diamonds are rare and cost a pretty penny. This means that there are no imperfections in the diamond that can be found under a 10X magnification. The Next grade is VVS1 & VVS2. With this grade one or two pinpoints or smaller inclusions can be found under magnification. To the naked eye these will not even register. If you have a 10x Power magnification you still need to have a trained eye or even map of the inclusions to find them. A VS1 & VS2 graded diamond will have more imperfections. You might be able to find them along the edges or outer area of the diamond under magnification. SI1 & SI2 are the lowest clarity of diamond that you still need magnification to see the imperfections. I1 & I2 have inclusions that you can see to the naked eye. “I” rated stones with black imperfections are also called salt and pepper diamonds. These diamonds definitely have a characteristic and are unique is their own way.

Here at Hendrickson’s, we recommend the VS1-SI2 clarity for any engagement ring. This is because to the naked eye they look amazing and under magnification you can tell it is your diamond.

Fourth "C": Carat

The Last “C” is Carat. The Carat is the weight and size of the diamond. In the good old days they use to use Carob seeds to weigh out stones. It was believed that all Carob seeds weighed the exact same at 200 milligrams. That is how the name carat came along. A one carat diamond weighs the same as one carob seed. Just like a US dollar is made out of 100 pennies, one carat is made out of 100 Points. With an Ideal cut, the chart above will show you the approximate millimeter size the stone should be.  The carat weight of a diamond has the biggest effect on how much it cost. A higher carat weight means the diamond is rarer (or heavier) and also more expensive. There are different carat weights where the price per carat drastically changes. Opting for a .94 carat weight which is similar in size to a 1.00 carat, can cost a lot less. The same goes for jumping up in .25, .50 & .75 weights.

A great hint for making the carat weight work for you is using Halos and cluster diamonds. If you have a smaller stone (less than a carat) you can incorporate a Halo. A halo is a ring of smaller diamonds surrounding the stone. This adds brilliances and volume to the ring.  It also makes the stone appear larger then it is. We don’t recommend halos for large diamonds because it tends to take away from the diamond at that point. The second hint is cluster diamonds. If you take 7 smaller similar sized diamonds and arrange in a circle with one in the center you get a cluster top. The cluster is the size of a 1-2 carat stone but only have a weight of .50-1.00ct diamonds. With clusters you also get the shine of seven diamonds catching the light instead of just one.

Why did I get stuck with Peridot?

When it comes to birthstone it feels like we really don’t have a choice. We are born on this one day and that is the stone or gem that is associated with that month. Now some people get lucky and get a diamond for their birthstone because they are born in April. A diamond is a treasured gem stone that is used for many occasions. Unlike the diamond August birthstone is a Peridot, which is the most controversial on liked birthstone. We can debate on what gem stone is better than the rest but the question behind Birthstones is, why did each month got the gem stone?

Birthstone Chart

When you look up a birthstone chart many versions come up with just minor changes. The prominent one was actually published in 1912 in the U.S. by the American Jewelry Association. At this point it was also introduced that you should wear your birthstone all year. Previously it was recommended to wear the stone for each month that month. An Individual would have 12 different ring, necklaces, earring or brooches that had one of the birthstones in it. For those that have a holistic view of the Gem stones, wearing them during their designated mouth would enhance the power from them.

When did birthstones start?

When did stones for each month start? Well in western civilizations it is believed it can be traced back to early Judaism with the breastplate of Aaron.  It had twelve stones on it to represent the 12 tribes. Then with Christianity came the 12 apostles, they each had a stone to represent them. When the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 15th century it was believed that the stones then represented a month. As technology increased supply and demand happened, some stones were moved to other months, dropped from the list, or replaced. Many old writings described and listed stones that names were not uniformed across the world so society did their best at finding what they we referencing. As the world advances, the supply and demand changes and the birthstone chart will change.
The U.S. birthstone chart is not the only chart. There are many charts across different countries, religions and beliefs that reference stones and gems for certain times. Another popular chart is the zodiac chart. There is a chart that is related to what zodiac sign you are and the stone you should wear. There is also a Day of the week chart that can relate to what day you were born on or what day it currently is.
There are so many different lists out there. It is really about what is available and what society will accept.
